OMG! Last minute planning of trips is completely NOT my thing. Yesterday, I spent the entire day looking for a half-decent hotel on ANY Washington subway line (I gave looking near the convention center) that didn't cost more than $450 per night! Let me tell ya - that was sooooooooooooo difficult!!! finally, i found a place - in a place called Shady Grove - that is as far as you can get from the convention centre, and still be kinda on the subway line (they said there's a shuttle). but it is about 25miles out (i have no idea how far that is btw. miles?! who the fuck still measures in miles?!?! geez! and they call themselves a first-class nation! pffft! j/k) ... ANYWAY. beacuse it's so far from downtown washington, i've decided to drive, and to bring andrew along. and gebus! because i'm not 25 and my credit card doesn't cover any kinda insurance what-so-ever, I have to pay ~$250+tax extra on the rental car!!! geez!! so that really sux. but oh well, what can i do??!?! ... at least i'll have a car when i go! (oh, and btw, you ppl are welcome to come along ... but u'll hafta find ur own hotel room [good luck!!!]... but obviously the trip down there is free)
About the convention: On the monday at the convention, they actually have an entire lecture on lipid rafts!!! how cool is that?!?! so i'm totally going to that. and i'll check out some posters and stuff. Next time, i'll probably have to present a poster. but that's in a year... when i have results and stuff. anyway... the other cool reason i wanna go to Washington (okay, not so cool by normal standards, but cool by mine!!!) is cuz I want to go to the Smithosonian. Normally, i'm not really a museum kinda girl (well, not really an art-museum kinda girl), but I brought back these postcards from China - they were my grandpa's [so, technically, i stole them], and they're really old, and they're from Washington, and I think they could be worth smt. if not, at least i'll get to see the same places my grandparents saw in the 40s, some 60 years later. I think that's pretty cool. :P On the back of these postcards, it says "place one cent stamp here"... ONE CENT!!! wow! so u know they're really really old!!! (i think it's like 30cents now... it'd be cooler if it said "place half-cent stamp here"... but that would be stupid)
Okay, gotta do more Washington research now. (the smithosonian is free - all of them [it's a collection of different museums that are all part of the 'smithosonian institute']! yay for budget travelers!)

Shady Grove is what it's name implies - it's shady. Don't wander around alone at night! Also, it's probably smarter to just drive to the nearest Metro station and take transit from there, because traffic in the MD/DC/VA area is hell on Earth. Besides, the Metro is cheap and super clean! The monuments are also free, and it's a fun walk, so check that out. Oh and don't forget The Mall, it's right where the Smithsonian is. Have fun!
