advice for morons

1. Do not name your newborn "Seven". i do not know if she named her kid after the movie, or if that was her favourite number, or perhaps this was her seventh kid, regardless - bad name, poor kid.

2. If you're not even old enough to sign your own consent forms, you really shouldn't be having any babies!!!

Interesting tidbit uno: there was a set of identical twins (soooooooooo cute) today. the interesting part was this: Twin A was born 23:43 on Dec.19, while Twin B was born 00:01 on Dec.20!!! I was talking to the mother (who was beyond nice!), and she said "ya, poor mommy! two birthday parties!". she was so cool. but anyways, ya, identical boys with non-identical birthdays. funny.

Interesting, but horrible tidbit, and it relates to advice #2...
Diane (omg, i wanna strangle her sometimes! another story for later) went to ask for consent from this one girl - she was 15, and a new mother. the teenager gave Diane major attitude. Ten minutes later, we were in the nurse's station, when a machine started to beep really loudly - for a good 10 minutes. The machine was hooked up to that attitude-ridden teenager's baby, and it was beeping because the baby's heart rate was much too fast (the machine starts beeping at 170bpm). I didn't think much of it at the time, just "aw, poor sickly 'lil baby" (after all, i have been to the level 2 NICU, and that's even sadder... trust me, it's horrible). unfortunately, the baby couldn't be moved down to the NICU cuz it was full already - so the baby had to stay up on our floor. Anyways, at the end of my shift, when i was bored (waiting for ppl), i talked to the nurse tending to the fast-heart-rate-baby:

me: what happened to her?
nurse: well, her mom dropped her on the floor.

me: what?!?! no way! are you serious????
nurse: yes
me: you're joking right?? tell me u're joking! u can't be serious! *giggle*
nurse: i'm serious
me: omg... seriously!?? seriously!??!
nurse: yes, seriously! *looking slightly irritated and pissed off now... so i decided to temporarily believe her... until it finally hit me slash sunk in*

as you can tell, i was surprised, to say the least. shocked and pissed would be a better description actually. SHE DROPPED HER BABY ON THE FLOOR!!! and now (well, as of 1PM today) the baby's O2 saturation was dropping, and her heart rate was climbing!!! i can't even describe how pissed we all were. I told my "boss" what happened, and she said "fuck" under her breath. normally, not a big deal. but this woman is like 45 and i've never ever heard her swear before, and we've had other piss-off CRAZY stressful days before. ... it was really really bad. the baby wouldn't stop crying, and her heart rate kept on intermittently spiking above 170bpm... and everytime it spiked, it would stay up there for a good 30seconds to 1 minute. it was scary! (where were the doctors at this point?! Nowhere to be seen on the ENTIRE floor!!) and the worst part?? the mother wasn't even crying and didn't even look sad!!! she looked non-chalant, completely and utterly non-caring, as if oblivious to everything going on around her!!! STUPID TEENAGER!!! if i dropped a baby, any baby, i would be bawling, i would be sooooooooooo mad at myself. and if i dropped MY baby, i would wanna shoot myself and hold my baby forever and ever and not let her go! i didn't see a single tear from that girl. and i was pissy/irratable for the rest of day, even now....

(i was slightly happier when i found that the animal lab ppl had moved my rats for me already and i didn't hafta do it! yay!!! ... *sigh* i donned my gown, hat, mask, and gloves in vain...)
