progress...

Skill mastered - ONE.  Foley insertion on circumsized penises.  haven't seen any un-circumsized ones - wtf?! 

Skill semi-mastered - ONE.  Stapling, woohoo!

Skill not yet mastered, but have attempted - ONE.  Suturing (subQ, knots, etc).

Skills not yet attempted and prolly won't get a chance to 'til i'm a resident (??) - MANY.  Cutting, opening, closing, actually doing stuff w/ organs.

Today was a weird day... there were two ORs going on at the same time, with one attending, one fellow, one sr resident, one jr resident, and me.  my little team (sr, jr, me) was doing one, and at one point, the jr left and the fellow came.  then, the attending came.  then the fellow left.  then the sr left to go to pathology.  THEN, the attending got called away cuz smt bad was happening in the other OR!!  so the lowly med student was left all alone in an OR with an open abdomen in front of her!!!  aahhhhh!!

so what did she do?  she attempted to ultrasound her finger... it didn't work.  then she decided to u/s the liver again... and couldn't really figure out what anything was.  THEN, she decided to u/s the heart and it was cool.  don't worry, there was a real doctor in the room - the anesthesiology.  she also discovered during this u/s process that the patient was rather dry, so the anes gave the pt more fluids!  yay discovery and accomplishment!!!  ... then my jr. came back and we were both like "what do we do now?"... then the sr came back and quickly ran away again!!!!  finally, everyone came back and we carried thru the rest of the procedure.  and that was my day in the OR.  surgery lasted from 9AM to 3PM ... i needed to pee, and eat, and sleep!!  so tired now... OR wipes me out... i think it's the lack of fluids, nutrition, and standing for 6hrs straight... plus focused concentration!!!!
